This extraordinarily funny, tongue-in-cheek analysis of that once-in-a-lifetime event, the Bar or Bat Mitzvah, is chronicled with scores of funny and familiar photographs from the 1970s through the early 1990s. BAR MITZVAH DISCO is devoted to not only discussions of puberty, parents, big shoulder pads, and even bigger hair, but the all-important choice of theme, be it Safari, or New York Deli. The pain of attending a yearlong parade of parties as a non-Jew, the furtive playing of hand-held video games during the service, the careful choosing of tuxedos to match the reception hall--all the stories combine to document an American cultural phenomenon. The chapter titles are taken from `80s pop hits, and the photographs range from the obligatory Torah-reading to the wave good-bye.
